Grâce aux rachats du Chicago Great Western Railway, du Minneapolis and St Louis Railway et d'autres compagnies, le C&NW finit par avoir dans les années 1970 l'un des réseaux les plus longs des États-Unis avec 19 000 km répartis sur 7 États. En 1972, la compagnie fut vendue à ses employés, et fut renommée Chicago and North Western Transportation Company. À la fin des années 1970, le réseau commença à se réduire. La vente d'une partie des lignes situées principalement dans le Dakota du Sud et le Minnesota, permit la création du Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad en 1986, lequel finit par être racheté par le Canadian Pacific Railway en 2008. Début 1995, l'abandon ou la vente de lignes, constituées en majorité d'embranchement à trafic réduit, principalement dans l'Iowa, l'Illinois, le Minnesota, le Dakota du Sud et le Wisconsin, ramena le réseau à 5000 km1. En avril 1995, le CNW cessa d'exister suite à son rachat par l'Union Pacific Railroad.

Le Kenosha Public Museum est situé sur le bord du lac Michigan. Il y a à l'intérieur de celui-ci des expositions sur des thèmes préhistoriques tel que des squelettes de mammouths découvert dans l'ouest de Kenosha en 1992. La datation au carbone 14 révèle que leur âge est de 12 500 ans.
Le Civil War Museum de Kenosha, encore en construction, a une ouverture prévue en 2008. Il montrera de façon interactive le rôle de six États du Midwest avant, durant et après la guerre de Sécession.

À Kenosha se trouve le Carthage College avec près de 2 000 étudiants à temps plein, la University of Wisconsin-Parkside avec 5 000 étudiants, et le Gateway Technical College. (Les trois universités ont leurs propres stations de radio.)
Le district a 26 écoles publiques primaires, 6 collèges et 5 lycées : Mary D. Bradford High School, George Nelson Tremper High School, Indian Trail Academy, Lakeview Tech Academy et Reuther Central High School.

La majorité des stations AM, FM et TV de Milwaukee et de Chicago peuvent être captée à Kenosha. 5 stations de radio émettent de Kenosha: WLIP (1050 AM), WGTD (91.1 FM), WIIL (95.1 FM), WIPZ (88.5 FM) et WWDV (96.9 FM).
